Rio+Saneamento is the newest water and wastewater company in 18 cities in the state of Rio de Janeiro, including 24 neighborhoods in the West Zone of the capital Rio, a company of Grupo Águas do Brasil created in partnership with Vinci Partners. With investments of BRL 4,7 billions, we will serve more than 2,6 million people over the next 35 years.

We began operations in the region on August 1, 2022 with the purpose of universalizing access to drinking water and waste water collection and treatment, meeting the goals set out in the New Legal Framework for Basic Sanitation.

We operate with the best ESG practices on the market to bring more health, dignity and quality of life to everyone. We have more than 25 years of experience from the Group in 15 concessions in the country.

We provide information on the quality of water distributed with transparency and effectiveness. The indices are reported in the accounts and on our website, monthly, based on a rigorous control report. The results are available for consultation permanently. In 2023, we will begin providing our customers with a water quality report annually, which aggregates information about the water source, water treatment and distribution processes.

When starting the assisted operation period, we carried out quality analyzes of all water sources used for public supply and effluent discharge, hiring an accredited laboratory to carry out the analyses. Raw water analyzes were carried out (upstream and downstream of the collection and release points), sediment analyzes and quality analyzes of the treated and distributed water and the treated effluent. All of these analyzes were part of a study prior to the assumption of services, with the aim of recognizing all sources and receiving water bodies.

With this information, a sustainability diagnosis was carried out in all municipalities where it operates, presenting the non-conformities found in the assisted operation and the adaptation action plans. Upon taking over the operation, we analyzed all licensing processes for the units and gathered information on the effluent release standards defined for each sewage treatment plant (ETE). These standards must be compatible with the water quality/class required for each receiving water body used to release treated effluents, complying with the resolutions of the National Environmental Council.

In our water and wastewater treatment units, we seek operational excellence in meeting the standards established by current legislation. Internal laboratories, implemented since the first day of operation, monitor the frequency of physical, chemical and bacteriological controls in the treatment stages and at the exit from the units and the distribution network, also analyzing taste and odor. We also have accredited external laboratories, which carry out monthly, bimonthly, quarterly and semi-annual controls in accordance with the provisions of Ordinance GM/MS No. 888/2021. All laboratories follow good laboratory and biosafety practices, in accordance with the standards of the National Health Surveillance Agency and other related regulations. There is also a quality management system, in accordance with the requirements specified in NBR ISO/IEC nº 17.025.

In 2022, we carried out 505,549 analyzes for operational and water quality control, as well as to comply with current legislation. We obtained 99% compliance in relation to the results of the analyzes to control the quality of the water distributed to all municipalities, taking into account the potability standard foreseen for the basic parameters of the Ministry of Health.

In wastewater treatment, 5,740 analyzes guaranteed the qualitative control of the stations. To release the treated effluent, we act in accordance with the resolutions of the State Environmental Council (Conema) nº 90/2021 (NOP 45) and nº 93/2021 (NOP 48). When we started the operation, the Sewage Quality Index (DBO) was 80%, evolving until reaching 100% regularity in December 2022.

In the period from August to December 2022, we used 713.4 tons of chemical products in our water and wastewater treatment processes. Purchased from external suppliers, these products are essential to guarantee the quality of treated water and sewage. Each municipality’s local operation maintains its own records of all chemical products purchased and in stock for use in all of its production units. This way, our local operations have control over how much was consumed in their operations.

The manifestations received in the consumer service system regarding water quality were duly handled and did not generate non-compliance in relation to the impacts on the population’s health caused by our services. During the year, we did not have any non-compliance that resulted in a fine, penalty or warning.
